Gaia was commissioned by Norfund and the company based in Moamba teams to provide an analysis of the status of the project in relation of the potential environmental and social risks. The following activities are being carried out to achieve this objective:

a. Assess the E&S risks associated with the additional land (based on IFC PSs and Mozambican legal framework on land);

b. Assess the water usage experience (for the 400 ha) and the Carthage estimates of the water needs for the expanded farm;

c. Review the implementation of the Environmental and Social Management Plan presented with the Simplified Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (Nov. 2017), including Biodiversity Management Plan, Stakeholder Engagement Plan and Social Development Plan;

d. Assess the compliance with the Mozambican legal requirements on the land rights; water license / concession; and environmental licensing process.

This project is currently managed by our team in Maputo, Mozambique as well as our team in Lisbon, Portugal.
